VAUGHAN | Family Tree Wanted

I’ve been researching my third great-grandfather William J. STEPHENS for quite some time. He is my “needle in the haystack,” or “brick wall.” He has one of the most generic names to research because there are many William J. STEPHENS in the time period I am researching. I have a tendency to post and ask about this subject in every aspect I can think of. The last name has been misspelled in the census as STEAPHENS or STEVENS. Because I’ve been stuck on him, I was researching the people he had been living with in the 1860 census when he was 1o years old. I’ve been into researching hypothetical family trees lately. I started researching the VAUGHN family a while ago and I started again last week with adding an “A” to the name VAUGHAN. That made a difference.

I figured out last week that or am pretty sure that Elizabeth RUSSELL VAUGHAN/VAUGHN KIRBY is sister to James RUSSELL who married Nancy BENSON and also to Nancy Asbury RUSSELL TWILLEY (who is the mother of Mary TWILLEY VAUGHAN, who was the first wife on William Asbury VAUGHAN/VAUGHN) who married Samuel TWILLEY. They were all married in Dorchester, Maryland and all eventually lived in the area of Henderson, Illinois. James RUSSELL traveled with his son William G. RUSSELL and family from Ohio to Hancock, Illinois. Anna RUSSELL daughter of William J. RUSSELL married William J. STEPHENS who lived with William Asbury VAUGHAN/VAUGHN (and his mother was Elizabeth RUSSELL VAUGHAN/VAUGHN KIRBY) in 1860 census in Henderson County, Illinois. William and Anna RUSSELL STEPHENS lived next door to William Asbury VAUGHAN/VAUGHN in the 1870 census. He would be cousin to Anna and her dad William. William J. STEPHENS and Anna RUSSELL met most likely because of family socials.

I’m looking for information on William J. STEPHENS. He was born abt. 1850 and married Anna RUSSELL in February 1870. They are listed in the Henderson County, IL 1870 and 1880 Census. I think I found William in the 1860 Census. William died, I believe sometime after 1894. Anna moved all her children to Lawrence County, Indiana by 1900 Census.

Who are William’s parents? If the census is correct, his dad was born in Pennslyvania and his mom was born in Ohio.

What year did William die?

Where is William buried? It could be in Southern Illinois. I guess they think Saline County, Illinois. Of course, we thought they had always been in southern Illinois until I uncovered them in the 1880 Census in northern Illinois…Henderson County, Illinois. They could have moved to Southern Illinois because Anna had family that resided down there.

jena, i hope you’re still out there.i have seen your james russell and nancy benson listed in dorchester co. md. marriage records.i beleive he is a younger brother of my ggg grandfather william russell 1800-ca. 1871.my william had 3 younger brothers who went to ohio or other parts west by 6/1/1847.they were joseph, james and edward russell.william was the oldest and stayed put in dorchester co. md.their parents were job russell ca. 1776-before 1820 and mary”polly”wheatley d. 6/1/1847 dorchester co. md.please contact me if this rings a bell or you’d like more info.-thanks-mark mccloskey

I am looking for information on James Russell born approx 1903 in Maryland, he married Nancy Benson on 14 June 1825 in Dorchester County, MD. The children I have for them are, Jane, Ellen, Bill, John Henry, Jobe (or Joseph). My line is through Jobe Russell b 1838 MD married Nancy Ellen Strickland. I have been researching my Kirby-Russell line and recently ran across Samuel Twilley/Nancy Russell in my research. They were enumerated right next to Thomas Kirby in the 1860 Henderson County, Illinois Census. Thomas Kirby was brother to Henry Kirby who married a Jane Russell. They were all from Dorchester County, Maryland. I’m guessing that Nancy and Jane were either sisters or cousins. Do you have any info on the Russell line? Furthermore, in this same census there was an Edward Russell married to an Elizabeth Twilley residing with a Spencer Wheatley (married Nancy Twilley). It would seem all these people are somehow connected. I do know that Nancy and Elizabeth were sisters….daughters of Samuel Twilley and Nancy Russell.

Hi, I’m trying to find information regarding William Asbury VAUGHAN. I know he was born in Maryland and died in Illinois in 1840. I have found a marriage record at the USGWarchives showing he was married to Elizabeth RUSSELL in Dorchester Co, MD, 25 Dec 1827. They had at least 5 children (John T, William A, Samuel, Mary and Joseph). I would like any info regarding him, especially about his parents. William is my 4th great-grandfather. I have quite a bit of information regarding his descendants that I can share, but am absolutely stumped trying to discover his parents (and Elizabeth RUSSELL’s parents for that matter.)
